SEATTLE, WA — (June 14, 2019) — Independent, nonprofit publisher Mountaineers Books is pleased to announce its early Fall 2019 book titles from leading outdoor writers, photographers, and artists including Corey Rich, Brendan Leonard, Sarah Kaizar, Sharon Wood, and Jeremy Collins. “National Geographic Adventurer of the Year” Heather “Anish” Anderson and Dierdre Wolownick-Honnold, the oldest known woman to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan, will make personal appearances and book signings at the upcoming 2019 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Denver, Colorado, June 18–20, 2019.

In the forthcoming Stories Behind the Images: Lessons from a Life in Adventure Photography (ISBN 978-1-68051-264-9, $29.95), acclaimed action sports photographer and director Corey Rich reveals what goes into getting the perfect shot—whether it’s capturing the humor of climbing legend Fred Beckey holding a “Will Belay for Food” cardboard sign, the intensity of Rebecca “The Queen of Pain” Rusch on her record-setting bike ride of the 142-mile Kokopelli Trail, or Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson’s historic Dawn Wall ascent. Stories Behind the Images will be available everywhere books are sold on September 1.
Bears Don’t Care About Your Problems: More Funny Shit in the Woods from Semi-Rad.com (ISBN 978-1-68051-270-0, $18.95) will be available in stores August 1. This collection of nearly eighty essays by bestselling writer, outdoor adventurer, and founder of Semi-Rad.com, Brendan Leonard, reflects his wry and witty outlook on wilderness, adventure, and running shoes. With a foreword by fellow writer and founder of Adventure Journal Steve Casimiro, the book also features Leonard’s trademark hand-drawn illustrations. Readers of all stripes will appreciate these humorous and often thoughtful observations about an outdoor life.
A collage of backpacking culture, Hiker Trash: Notes, Sketches, and Other Detritus from the Appalachian Trail (ISBN 978-1-68051-218-2, $21.95) offers a glimpse of the off-beat, diverse community that is drawn to thru-hiking the country’s oldest long-distance trail. It features a collection of original illustrations by author and artist Sarah Kaizar (who thru-hiked the AT in 2015), as well as color photos by Nicholas Reichard and excerpts from the AT’s famed shelter log books that highlight hikers’ thoughts, fears, frustrations, and joys. Available in stores September 1.
Rising: Becoming the First North American Woman on Everest (ISBN 978-1-68051-262-5, $24.95), available October 1, is Sharon Wood’s inspirational life story of personal growth and achievement in the shadow of Everest. In 1986, Wood was part of a self-supported Canadian team with ambitions to reach the summit via a variation on the dangerous West Ridge; success would make Wood the first North American woman to do so. However, at the same time there was an American team on the mountain with the same goal in mind. Rising is a part of Mountaineers Books Legends & Lore series.
Award-winning artist and storyteller Jeremy Collins presents 12 original, hand-drawn works for this annual update to his popular The Wild Lines of Jeremy Collins Wall Calendar 2020 (ISBN 978-1-68051-261-8, $19.95). Jeremy’s striking art work ranges from scenic paintings to portraits to journal sketches, all inspired by his wilderness adventures. Calendar dates include standard national holidays as well as dates relevant to the outdoor, conservation, and adventure communities—from the birthday of John Muir to a notice of World Wetlands Day.
Each month includes a mini-essay by Jeremy about his artwork, inspirations, or environmental history, and “Action Prompts” to encourage community engagement.

Mountaineers Books continues its 60-year tradition of publishing books for women adventurers. Since first publishing Miles from Nowhere: A Round-the-World Bicycle Adventure by Barbara Savage in 1983, long considered a classic in adventure literature, Mountaineers Books has been especially proud to share many adventure narratives and memoirs by women writers, photographers, and explorers.

The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story (ISBN 978-1-68051-242-7, $24.95), is the memoir by Dierdre Wolownick, mother of famed free-soloist Alex Honnold, about how she overcame a difficult childhood and self-doubt to transform her life through climbing and outdoor activities. She began climbing with her son at age 55 and at age 66 she climbed El Cap, making her the oldest woman to accomplish the feat. The Sharp End of Life has been featured in People, Outside, REI Co-op Journal, and Adventure Journal, among other media.
