The fifth annual National CleanUp Day, in partnership with EARTHDAY.ORG and Keep America Beautiful, will be taking place on Saturday, September 18th Cleanup Month is all of September and participants are able to choose their own dates and locations on the global map. National CleanUp Day addresses the issue of mismanaged waste and litter across America and encourages people to get out and clean up their communities.
Since its inception in 2017, millions of individuals have helped clean up their local parks, beaches, rivers, forests and everywhere in between. Organizations big and small are joining the cause by arranging their very own Tailored CleanUp™ catered to their members.
Businesses, municipalities, and youth organizations across the country are taking part in this year’s event, and conducting large, small and individual cleanups in their neighborhoods and cities in all 50 States and 5 Territories.
The Girl Scouts are just one example. They plan to have troops conduct cleanups on the 18th, as National CleanUp Day perfectly aligns with their values.
“Girl Scouts is all about making the world a better place. Our members continually strive to make positive change in their communities and the world around them,” said Lori Williamson, program director for Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska. “We know that when we work together, our impact is amplified. By focusing on National Cleanup Day, Girl Scouts become part of something big and can put their strength and commitment toward improving our planet.” The program originated with the Girl Scouts globally in 2020 and badges are awarded in virtually every country in the world.
Bryan Smith, Assistant Director of Friends of Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Ohio also sees National CleanUp Day as a great opportunity for his town to work together toward shared improvement.
“National CleanUp Day is extremely important to Friends of Portsmouth because it falls in line with our mission and what our group is trying to accomplish within the community. We want to bring local organizations such as Main Street Portsmouth, The Counseling Center, and others together to take pride in their community.” Portsmouth first participated in National CleanUp Day in 2020 and saw a large increase in the number of volunteers.
Participants in National CleanUp Day should adhere to all local guidance, and perform vigorous safety and sanitation practices.
